Cordyceps Coffee: Benefits, Studied Doses, and the Blends That Contain It
Cordyceps militaris / Ophiocordyceps sinensis (Cs-4)
In one line
Cordyceps coffee is coffee blended with cultivated Cordyceps militaris or Cs-4 mycelium extract. Small human trials measured exercise tolerance, VO2 max and fatigue in older adults, using 1,000–4,000 mg per day — roughly 5–20 times the dose in a typical cup of mushroom coffee. It is generally well tolerated, with mild GI upset reported and caution advised alongside anticoagulants.
What this page covers
- Which species is actually in coffee (almost always cultivated C. militaris)
- Doses used in the exercise trials
- Coffees that contain cordyceps
What it does not cover
- Wild-harvested Ophiocordyceps sinensis, which is not what coffee brands use
- Studied for
- Exercise tolerance and VO2 max · Fatigue in older adults
- Dose in human studies
- 1,000–4,000 mg/day
- Safety
- Generally well tolerated; mild GI upset reported. Caution with anticoagulants.
What the trials used
The most cited modern trial gave healthy adults 4 g/day of a Cordyceps militaris blend for three weeks and measured VO2 max and time to exhaustion. Improvements appeared with chronic use, not after a single dose. Older Chinese studies of the Cs-4 mycelium strain used around 3 g/day in older adults.
What is in your cup
Every coffee brand we have checked uses cultivated Cordyceps militaris (or Cs-4), which is appropriate — it is the studied form. The gap is dose: coffee servings typically disclose 200–800 mg of cordyceps, or fold it into an undisclosed blend total.

Frequently asked questions
Does cordyceps in coffee give you energy?
Not in the way caffeine does. Trials of Cordyceps militaris at 4 g/day for three weeks found improved high-intensity exercise tolerance; there was no acute effect after a single dose. Coffee blends typically contain 200–800 mg, so any effect would come from consistent daily use, not one cup.
Is the cordyceps in coffee the expensive wild kind?
No. Wild Ophiocordyceps sinensis sells for thousands of dollars per kilo. Coffee brands use cultivated Cordyceps militaris or the Cs-4 mycelium strain, which are inexpensive and are the forms used in most studies anyway.
Can I drink cordyceps coffee before a workout?
You can, but expect the caffeine — not the cordyceps — to be what you feel. The endurance data comes from three weeks of daily dosing at a much higher amount than a cup provides.
