In one line

MUD\WTR mushroom coffee is not coffee but a cacao-chai alternative (Original), and the most transparent multi-mushroom blend on the market: 560 mg each of lion's mane, chaga, reishi and cordyceps, with 35 mg caffeine. The mushrooms are grown as mycelium on oats and sorghum, so part of that weight is grain, and $1.67 a cup is steep.

Scored on our six criteria — how we test.

What we liked
  • Per-species amounts on the label: 560 mg each of lion's mane, chaga, reishi and cordyceps (2,240 mg total)
  • USDA Organic, no sweeteners, and only 35 mg caffeine — the easiest blend to drink late in the day
  • The biggest total mushroom dose of any mainstream blend we've tracked
What held it back
  • Mushrooms are grown as mycelium on organic oats and sorghum, so part of that 2,240 mg is grain substrate, not mushroom
  • $50 for 30 servings ($1.67 per cup) at the one-time price; the frother starter kit is priced higher
  • No published certificate of analysis that we could find
Who should skip it
  • You want something that tastes like coffee — this is spiced cacao and black tea
  • You need the cheapest daily cup; RYZE and Laird cost far less per serving

It is not coffee, and that is the point

MUD\WTR built its brand on people quitting coffee, so the Original tin contains none. The base is organic cacao and black tea, seasoned with a masala chai spice mix (cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, cardamom, black pepper, nutmeg, cloves) and a pinch of Himalayan salt. Four mushrooms make up 2,240 mg of the roughly 6 g scoop. If you are shopping for a lower-caffeine morning ritual rather than a coffee substitute that tastes like coffee, this is the category leader.

In December 2025 the company finally launched a product with real beans: a blend of full-strength arabica and Swiss Water decaf with L-theanine and the same four mushrooms, at 45 mg caffeine per cup. We have not tested it yet; this review is the Original.

Taste

Reviewers consistently describe the Original as a thin, spiced hot chocolate with a black-tea finish and a noticeable earthy undertone from the mushrooms. The powder does not fully dissolve — the brand ships a frother in the starter kit for a reason — and a fine sediment settles at the bottom of the cup. People who like chai tend to like it; people expecting a mocha usually add milk or a creamer. Without sweetener it is bitter-leaning, which is a plus if you want to avoid sugar.

Price and value

$50 for a 30-serving tin is $1.67 per cup at the one-time price, the highest of the big three coffee-alternative brands. The subscription drops it to $1.33 and the 90-serving bag lowers it further. You are paying for the largest disclosed mushroom quantity in the category, but on a straight per-cup basis this is a premium product.

Transparency

This is where MUD\WTR earns its score. The label gives 560 mg for each of the four mushrooms, states that the blend uses both mycelial biomass and fruiting bodies, and names the substrate (organic oats and sorghum). The catch is that mycelium grown on grain includes the grain, so the 2,240 mg is not 2,240 mg of mushroom tissue. No beta-glucan percentage is given, and we could not find a published certificate of analysis.

Verdict

The pick if you want a fully disclosed, higher-dose mushroom blend and you have already made peace with giving up coffee flavour. Not a value buy, and not for anyone who wants a cup that tastes like a cup of coffee.

Frequently asked questions

How much caffeine is in MUD\WTR?

The Original blend has about 35 mg of caffeine per serving, roughly a third of an 8 oz cup of brewed coffee. It comes from organic black tea powder rather than coffee beans. The mushrooms and cacao add a negligible amount, so most people can drink it in the afternoon without affecting sleep.

Is MUD\WTR actually coffee?

No. The Original blend is cacao, masala chai spices, black tea, turmeric and four mushrooms — there is no coffee in it. In December 2025 the company added a separate product that blends real arabica with Swiss Water decaf, L-theanine and mushrooms, but this review covers the Original tin.

How much lion's mane is in MUD\WTR?

MUD\WTR lists 560 mg of lion's mane per serving, alongside 560 mg each of chaga, reishi and cordyceps for a 2,240 mg total. The blend is grown as mycelium on organic oats and sorghum plus fruiting bodies, so the figure includes some grain substrate. It is still more than most competitors disclose.

How much does MUD\WTR cost per serving?

The 30-serving tin is $50 one-time, or $1.67 per cup. Subscribing drops it to $40, or $1.33 per cup, and the 90-serving bag is cheaper again. That puts it well above RYZE and Laird Superfood, though you are getting a larger stated mushroom dose for the money.
