Shiitake Coffee: Benefits, Studied Doses, and the Blends That Contain It

Lentinula edodes

In one line

Shiitake coffee is coffee blended with Lentinula edodes, a safe, widely eaten culinary mushroom. The human research measured immune markers from dietary intake, with adults eating 5–10 g of dried shiitake a day — a six-mushroom coffee blend contains a small fraction of that. The only notable reaction, shiitake dermatitis, comes from raw or undercooked mushrooms, not extracts.

What this page covers

  • What the dietary study measured
  • Why shiitake pads out 'six-mushroom' labels
  • Coffees that contain shiitake

What it does not cover

  • Lentinan injections used in Japanese oncology
Studied for
Immune markers from dietary intake · Lentinan extract as a cancer adjunct (Japan)
Dose in human studies
5–10 g/day dried mushroom (dietary study)
Safety
Safe as food; rare 'shiitake dermatitis' from raw or undercooked mushrooms, not from extracts.

A food, not a nootropic

Shiitake's evidence is dietary: a four-week study in which adults ate 5–10 g of dried shiitake daily and showed changes in immune markers. Nothing in that literature involves coffee-blend quantities, and no coffee brand claims a specific shiitake dose.

What it does on a label

It raises the mushroom count. We give it no taste penalty and no dose credit.

Frequently asked questions

Why is shiitake in my mushroom coffee?

It lets a label count six or seven mushrooms and claim beta-glucans and immune support. Shiitake is cheap, mild, and dissolves into a blend without changing the taste.

Does shiitake in coffee support immunity?

A 2015 dietary study found immune-marker changes in adults eating 5–10 g of dried shiitake daily for four weeks. That is roughly 10–30 times what a six-mushroom coffee blend delivers, so the coffee dose is unproven.

Is shiitake safe every day?

Yes. It is one of the most widely eaten mushrooms in the world. The only notable reaction, a rash called shiitake dermatitis, comes from eating raw or undercooked whole mushrooms, not from extract powders.
