If you take it black
Shroomi’s aroma was its calling card. The ground coffee had a brighter edge and a toasted finish. Dawn Patrol leaned toward cocoa and toasted nuts. Look past the two-tenths gap and the individual scores tell a better story: two tasters preferred Shroomi black, two preferred Dawn Patrol, and two scored them equally. Pick by flavor here.

If you add milk
Five of six tasters preferred Dawn Patrol to Shroomi in the milk round. The roasted coffee flavor in Dawn Patrol still came through, while Shroomi lost some of the aroma that made the black cup stand out. If you want the instant option, that’s an easy call. Dawn Patrol review.

What went into each cup
We brewed Shroomi through a paper filter for three minutes. Dawn Patrol is instant and got a 30-second stir. For the milk round, each 30 mL tasting portion got 5 mL of 2% milk. If you usually drink a large latte, that proportion matters: our panel was judging coffee with a splash of milk. See all seven coffees side by side.
