How We Test Mushroom Coffee

Updated

Step 1 — Buy at retail

Every product is purchased the way you would buy it: from the brand's site or Amazon, at the listed one-time price. Subscription discounts are noted but the one-time price is what we use for price per serving, because it is the price you actually see.

Step 2 — Drink it for two weeks

Each coffee is prepared per the label instructions (hot water, no milk or sweetener for the taste score) and drunk daily for at least 14 days. Taste notes are recorded on days 1, 7 and 14.

Step 3 — Score six criteria

CriterionWhat earns a 5What earns a 1
Taste & drinkabilityIndistinguishable from a good medium-roast instantBitter, gritty, or needs masking
Ingredient qualityOrganic, fruiting body, no fillers or sweetenersMycelium-on-grain, added sugar, "natural flavors"
Label transparencyPer-species mg, part used, beta-glucan %, extraction method all statedProprietary blend total only
Price per servingUnder $1.00Over $2.00
Third-party testingBatch COAs published for heavy metals and contaminantsNo testing claim
Mushroom dosageNamed species at or near the study doseUnder 10% of the study dose or undisclosed

The overall score is the unweighted mean. We publish all six so you can re-weight for what matters to you.

Step 4 — Label versus research

For each mushroom in the blend we list the label dose next to the dose used in the named human studies (see each mushroom page for the sources). This is the check most reviews skip, and it is the one that separates a real dose from a sprinkle.

Medical review

Health-related pages are checked by a named clinician before they publish — see our medical review team and how to verify their credentials.

What we don't do

We don't lab-test products ourselves — yet. We rely on published certificates of analysis, and we say so when a brand doesn't publish one. We don't test effects on cognition or energy; the studies that exist ran for weeks at doses coffee can't deliver, and we won't pretend a two-week drinking test can measure that.
