What Is Mushroom Coffee? A Plain-Language Guide

By , MD, FACOG·

In one line

Mushroom coffee is ordinary coffee blended with powdered extracts of functional mushrooms like lion's mane and chaga; it has about half the caffeine of a normal cup, tastes mostly like coffee, contains no psychoactive mushrooms, and delivers far less of each mushroom than the human studies used.

What this page covers

  • Ingredients, caffeine and taste
  • The evidence in one paragraph per mushroom
  • Who it suits and who should skip it

What it does not cover

  • Psilocybin — mushroom coffee contains no psychoactive mushrooms

What's in the bag

Two things: coffee (usually instant arabica, sometimes ground beans) and dried mushroom extract powder. Most blends add two to six mushrooms; some add MCT oil, collagen, L-theanine or cacao. The mushrooms are grown on farms, dried, and either ground whole or extracted with hot water or alcohol.

Caffeine

Instant blends use less coffee per scoop, so a serving typically has 30–60 mg of caffeine versus about 95 mg in an 8 oz brewed cup. That halving is the most reliable "benefit" of mushroom coffee — if regular coffee makes you jittery, the lower dose is what you'll feel.

The evidence, honestly

  • Lion's mane has one well-known cognition trial at 3 g/day; coffee delivers a fraction of that.
  • Cordyceps has small endurance trials at 1–4 g/day; same gap.
  • Chaga has no completed human trials and a documented oxalate risk.
  • Reishi and turkey tail evidence comes from extracts at gram doses in clinical settings.

See each mushroom page for the named studies and doses.

Who it's for

People who want a gentler coffee, people who already take these mushrooms and prefer drinking them, and people who like the ritual. It is not for anyone expecting a proven cognitive or immune effect from one cup.

Frequently asked questions

Does mushroom coffee have caffeine?

Yes, unless labelled decaf. Most instant blends contain 30–60 mg per serving — about half an 8 oz brewed cup — because they use less coffee per scoop. Ground mushroom coffees are closer to a normal cup.

What does mushroom coffee taste like?

Mostly like a medium-roast instant coffee, slightly earthy. Blends heavy in reishi taste bitter; blends with added MCT or coconut taste creamy. None taste like mushrooms in the culinary sense.

Is mushroom coffee healthier than regular coffee?

It has less caffeine, which helps if you're sensitive. Beyond that, the mushroom doses in a cup are well below the amounts used in human trials, so the extra health benefit is unproven. Regular coffee itself is already associated with health benefits in large studies.

Can you get high from mushroom coffee?

No. The mushrooms used — lion's mane, chaga, cordyceps, reishi, turkey tail — are culinary or medicinal fungi with no psychoactive compounds.
