Is Shyne Coffee Good? Canada's Single-Mushroom Instant Reviewed

By , MD, FACOG·

In one line

Shyne mushroom coffee is the single-mushroom pick: 500 mg of lion's mane (or chaga, or turkey tail) per cup in a sweet, creamy Canadian instant with 70 mg caffeine, a clearer dose than any multi-mushroom blend. But the extract is part mycelium, there is no published lab testing, and the one-time price is CAD $1.73 a cup.

Scored on our six criteria — how we test.

What we liked
  • One mushroom per SKU with a stated 500 mg dose — you know exactly what you are getting, which no multi-blend on this page offers
  • Organic Papua New Guinea instant with the creamer and sweetener already in; reviewers consistently call it the easiest-drinking mushroom coffee
  • Made in Ontario and stocked in 35+ Healthy Planet stores plus Amazon.ca
What held it back
  • The lion's mane is dual-extracted from mycelium and fruiting bodies, not fruiting body alone
  • CAD $52 one-time for 30 cups is $1.73 a cup; the CAD $39/month subscription is the price the brand actually wants you to pay
  • Contains 2 g maple sugar and a maltodextrin-based oat/coconut creamer per cup; no published lab testing
Who should skip it
  • You want a black, unsweetened coffee
  • You want fruiting-body-only extract

Why it's on our radar

Shyne, from Nature Lion in Brantford, Ontario, is the rare mushroom coffee that refuses to blend. Three SKUs, one mushroom each — lion's mane, chaga, turkey tail — at 500 mg a cup, sold through Healthy Planet's Ontario stores and Amazon.ca. For a category built on proprietary six-mushroom totals, that is a genuinely different idea.

Taste

Our two-week test is still in progress, so this draws on the ingredient list and reviewer consensus. The formula includes an oat-and-coconut creamer and 2 g of maple sugar, so it is a ready-made light latte rather than a black coffee, and reviewers consistently describe it as smooth, mildly sweet and free of any mushroom taste. Lion's mane is nearly flavourless at this dose anyway; the creamer would hide it regardless.

Price and value

CAD $52 for 30 cups one-time is CAD $1.73 a cup, which is steep. The brand clearly wants subscribers: CAD $29 the first month and CAD $39 after, or CAD $1.30 a cup, and a three-blend starter pack advertised from 96 cents. We rate on the one-time figure, as always.

Transparency

Good on the things that matter. Because there is one mushroom, the 500 mg on the label is an actual dose, and Shyne states the extraction method and that the extract comes from mycelium and fruiting bodies together. That honesty cuts both ways — fruiting-body purists will pass — and there is no beta-glucan figure or published COA, only a general "tested for purity and potency" line in the brand's press.

Verdict

The clearest single-mushroom dose in a coffee we have found, at 50% of the lowest studied lion's mane amount. Worth it for Canadians who want a sweet, creamy daily cup with a known dose; less so if you drink black or want fruiting-body-only.

Frequently asked questions

How much lion's mane is in Shyne Coffee?

500 mg of organic lion's mane extract per 6 g serving, stated on the label. Shyne describes it as dual-extracted with water and fermentation from both mycelium and fruiting bodies. That is half the lowest dose used in the human cognition trials, and because it is the only mushroom in the cup, it is a real 500 mg rather than a share of a blend.

How much caffeine is in Shyne mushroom coffee?

Shyne says each cup has less caffeine than a standard drip coffee and points to a caffeine calculator on its site; the figures there put a 6 g serving at roughly 65–75 mg. We list 70 mg. The coffee is organic freeze-dried instant from Papua New Guinea, so the caffeine is from real coffee rather than added.

How much does Shyne Coffee cost per cup?

The Lion's Mane Coffee is CAD $52 for 30 cups as a one-time purchase, or about CAD $1.73 per cup. On subscription it is CAD $29 for the first month and CAD $39 after, which is CAD $1.30 per cup and the price the brand advertises as from 96 cents a cup on its three-blend starter pack.

Is Shyne Coffee sweetened?

Yes. Each cup contains about 2 g of maple sugar plus an organic dairy-free creamer made from oat milk, coconut milk powder and maltodextrin, so it makes a light, sweet latte-style drink from water alone. If you prefer black coffee or need to avoid sugar and maltodextrin, this is not the right format.
